Aw man. Usually I think, “Scott, get out of my head! We think the same!” But for me, when I was like 7 or 8 or whatever I was when I had an Atari 2600, the cover art helped fuel my imagination for when I played those games. I’d imagine in my head that the blocky graphics were actually those cool scenes on the cover.
Also I feel like that art style of the time was more pervasive than I remembered. I recently saw the cover of “The Applesoft Tutorial” BASIC manual and the cover art was weirdly reminiscent of those Atari box covers.
